For every action in baseball, there’s usually an equal and opposite reaction. Such was the case when the Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to Colorado.
The loss of Scutaro left the Sox without a starting shortstop, meaning that Mike Aviles and Nick Punto would likely be sharing the position. The problem with that is that Aviles was scheduled to see some outfield duty after the trade of Josh Reddick to Oakland. Even though the team picked up Ryan Sweeney, a very good defensive outfielder, there was depth problems with Darnell McDonald the lone available body and Carl Crawford scheduled to start the season late after wrist surgery.
So on Monday, the Sox came up with one solution, agreeing to sign one of their longtime targets, free agent Cody Ross, who represents the right-handed outfield batter that general manager Ben Cherington had been seeking. Ross (who, oddly, throws left-handed), is 31, an eight-year veteran who has a career line of .261/.323/.456..779 (BA, OBP, SLG, OPS)
