How fitting was it that Mr. The Donald flipped the script by denying Newt his endorsement and switched to Romney in the space of a few hours and in the process made himself the story, not the politicians.

What would Romney want the birther vote for? He needs it. For whatever reason, Trump seems to attract the John Birch wing of the Republican party. Romney needs the cranks to start coming over to his side to complete his slog to the nomination. He also needs to dominate news cycles over Gingrich as Gingrich has very little money and depends on the media for his "ads".

All in all there is a bit of a taint here on Romney, but he was going to have to get in the mud at some point regardless of who it was with.
