Outlasting closer market may benefit Sox - Gordon Edes

And, as we noted shortly after the Sox lost Papelbon, they may be in a position not only to sign a premium closer but under the new CBA rules do so without losing a first-round draft pick. This, after gaining a first-rounder from the Phillies, plus a sandwich pick, because the Phillies jumped early and signed Papelbon under the old rules.

The Red Sox engaged the
Oakland Athletics Tuesday regarding closer Andrew Bailey, but at this stage there did not appear to be a match, with Oakland looking for a better group of prospects than the Sox have so far put on the table.

Bailey is good but nothing special. I'd be happy to have him, but not at too steep a price.
