Singapore, home of a US naval base, saw the docking of one of China's newest-gen naval platforms at a Singapore dock. Singapore, after watching the Chinese get into tiffs with the Vietnamese and the Filipinos over naval claims, has asked China to "clarify" its aims and ambitions in the South China Seas. I have no doubt that the Chinese will more or less refuse to do that, but more importantly is the story within the story of rising tensions between the Chinese and the Vietnamese. Traditional enemies of the Chinese, the Vietnamese sit directly on their border. It is also crucial to ask what the Vietnamese would lose in a confrontation, even a hot one, with the Chinese. A conflict would certainly be short and China would be hard pressed to impact anything of importance to the Vietnamese, as they have little, so while the Vietnamese certainly can't go about provoking fights, they have some experience in taking on large nation states.
