I'm not totally happy to see Papelbon go to the Phillies, but $50 million is a lot to sink into a closer, especially one not named Mariano Rivera. Papelbon had a great 5-year run with the Sox, and was on the mound when the Red Sox won the Series in 2007. But, honestly, the outsized personality and emotional roller coaster act was setting a tone in the clubhouse. Instead of a team, the Red Sox now had a group of large personalities fighting for space and feeling more free to explore just how far they could take "being themselves". Papes was an awesome player. I don't think he is worth $12 million per year or anything close to that, and I think that if the team is going to retool, he was probably one of the people that had to go. Best of luck, Jon.
