Penn State Said to Be Planning Paterno Exit Amid Scandal - MARK VIERA and PETE THAMEL

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/09/sports/ncaafootball/penn-state-said-to-be-planning-paternos-exit.html?pagewanted=all

Joe Paterno was a man that I admired. Not any longer. When an assistant coach came to Paterno in 2002 and told him, at Paterno's home, that he had seen another assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, raping a child in the showers at the stadium, Paterno turned it over to his superiors and asked no further questions (allegedly). When Sandusky was cleared in what is now revealed to be a foul and putrid arrangement to protect the program and Paterno himself, Sandusky stayed on.
Paterno shrugged and allowed a man accused of raping a child to stay at his side because, you know, everyone gets accused of raping children at some point in his career, right? I mean, just because a guy starts a program at Penn State to have access at risk kids who may have already normalized abusive situations, have chaotic home lives, and are less credible than middle class kids doesn't mean he's a queer, right? How would a coach who has written books on leadership, commands the respect of millions, and was until recently a living definition of ethics have any way of finding out that his handpicked successor was a rapist? Who would he have asked? I mean it's not like someone came to his home and told him, right? It's not like janitors were reporting Sandusky's inappropriate behavior, or that Sandusky was "retired" abruptly in 2005 but still enjoyed access to the stadium and children on Penn State's campus based on Paterno's order, right?
